In every different culture there are distinct ways of greeting each other. In India it’s a Namaste. In Europe it’s a Handshake. In China it’s a Kowtow (prostrating). In Thailand it’s a Wai (similar to Namaste). In Phillipnes it’s a Mano (taking the right hand of the elder and pressing it on one’s forehead). And the most common one is saying a Hello irrespective of the country or the culture one belongs to.

But have you ever thought why do we say “Pranam” and why are the people of Nijanand Sampraday called as Pranamis?

Well as per different seers, scriptures and religious books there are various reasons for greeting each other with Pranam.

The most popular & accepted reason for saying Pranam is that we i.e. the 12000 consorts of Shri Rajji everyday greet Shri Raj Shyamaji with Pranam in morning in the Eternal Supreme Abode (Paramdhaam) hence the same tradition of greeting Him is being continued here in this third universe that is in the Pratibimb Kal Maya Brahmand. This is also the reason for our Sampraday being called as Shri Krishna Pranami Sampraday. (Shri Krishna being the another name of Shri Raj)

The other reason is, as we are the devotees of Shri Raj Shyamaji and as He resides above the whole Universe that is above the Hadd or the limits known as “Par”, He (Shri Rajji) is also addressed as “Parbrahm” and as we chant his name that is “Naam” we say Parnaam or the modified form Pranam.

I believe in the first reason completely but I would like to add the rewards attached with saying Pranam as per our scriptures which might prompt everyone to use this on meeting with the beloved sakhis / Sundarsath and also so that its significance can be explained to every layman.

Our ancient Bhartiya culture and Santan Dharma have been the mother of all cultures and religions, there is a reason behind everything in our religion. Respect and reverence have always been the keystone of our culture.

As per the third reason according to Manusmriti,

अभिवादानशिलस्य, नित्यं व्रुद्धोपसेविनः ।
चत्वारि तस्य वर्धन्ते, आयुर्विध्या यशोबलम ॥ (मनुस्मृति २.१२१)

Abhivaadaanshilasya, nityam vrudhopsevinah |
Chatvaari tasya vardhante, aayurvidhya yashobalam ||

It means on greeting or saluting the elder people with a Pranam one gets these four things longevity (long life) आयु, knowledge विध्या, fame यश & strength बल.

यो न वेत्यभिवादस्य विप्रः प्रत्येभिवादनम् ।
नाभिवाध्यः स विदुषा यथा शुद्रस्तथैव सः ॥ (मनुस्मृति २.१२६)

Yo na vetyabhivaadasya viprah pratyebhivaadanam |
Naabhivaadyah sa vidusha yathaa shudrastthaiv sah ||

And if such a person on greeting him with a Pranam does not reply with a Pranam then he is to be construed as a Shudra and hence does not be deserve to be greeted with Pranam.

There are so many instances where we can see that the use of Pranam has been prevalent since ancient times.

In Mathura on the way Akrurji is seen doing Pranam to Shri Krishnaji and Shri Balramji, in return even Shri Krishnaji & Shri Balramji greeted Akrurji with a Pranam.

In Maheshwar Tantra Vishnuji is seen requesting his beloved wife Laxmiji with Pranam repeatedly by saying her not to punish herself with harsh austerity.

Due to the give and take of Pranam frequently in olden times there was no dearth of long life, wealth, fame, strength or knowledge. On forgetting our culture we have been the sufferers, but we should be proud that we have got the golden chance of getting the blessings as we have accepted the teachings of our Nijanandacharya Shri Devchandra Maharaj and by being the followers of Shri Krishna Pranami Sampraday.

It is also said that there is no rule that the old people should not be the first ones to say Pranam. No hindrance of caste, creed or age binds us to say Pranam.

Hence from now onwards lets be free, be polite, fold our hands and greet everyone we meet with a Pranam for the rewards are worth grabbing.
